Returning
to the models of past years, you can see a variety of ideas and forms. But in
the matter of evolution, not only victories, but also defeats are important.
Failed attempts help to create more successful models that can later become
legendary. One of these attempts will be described in this article.
The Ford
Corsair was designed to fill the price gap between the cheaper Cortina and the
expensive Zephyr and Zodiac variants. He went into production in 1964 in the
back of a sedan and in 1967 in the back of a station wagon.
FORD CORSAIR 1967
A
distinctive feature of this model is the arrow-shaped nose, and the Ford
Thunderbird model is taken as the basis for the design. The design of the model
was a cross between Taunus and Thunderbird. But, nevertheless, such a design
did not delight the imagination of customers, and rather rejected than
attracted to itself.
In the
first versions, the car had a 1.5-liter engine with 60 horsepower. In
subsequent versions, under the hood, V4 configuration engines with a volume of
1663 cubic centimeters and 2000 cubic centimeters were installed. The
disadvantage of the two-liter model was strong vibration and a lot of noise
while riding. But an increase in engine capacity was rather a necessity, since
with smaller volumes, the already excellent driving characteristics suffered
greatly.
The main
problem with Corsair was the overweight model. And his pointed nose only made
the car uncontrollable at high speeds. But even two-liter models could
accelerate only to 150 km / h, which made him not the most attractive
representative in his class. This was due to the fact that the weight of the
model was too much distributed on the front wheels. In addition, this fact
worsened the controllability of the model even at low speed.
FORD CORSAIR 1967
Ford also
produced an exclusive version of this model, which had a two-liter engine and a
different exterior finish. The essence of its creation was to ensure
competition in the premium class.
Given all
the shortcomings of Corsair, we can safely assume that it was not successful
with customers. And this assumption will be absolutely true. The model did not
find popularity and was quickly replaced in 1970. In total, not more than three
hundred thousand copies were produced.
Perhaps
Corsair is a kind of failure, but because of its unusual design it may well
find a place in museums or private collections.
