The fifth generation of the Ford Explorer SUV (the first was released back in 1990) was marked by the abandonment of the frame structure in favor of a monocoque body. The technical basis is characterized by a whole set of multi-brand borrowings. For example, the model is built on the Ford D4 platform, which was a further development of the D3 platform for light SUVs, and the latter, in turn, is based on the P2 platform, originally created by Volvo engineers during the period when the brand was owned by the Ford concern.  The black body pillars (only the center rear ones painted in body color) hint at the design of the Land Rover SUVs that the same Chief Design Engineer Jim Holland worked on.
