FORD EXPLORER - auto for all occasions
Production of the first Ford Explorer series began in April 1990, and in May of that year Ford Explorer became available for purchase. Today a car of this brand has become a kind of symbol of America. Explorer immediately gained recognition in the US automobile markets, and went far ahead of its competitors. Cars conquered customers with a very spacious, comfortable cabin, as well as passenger capacity: in the Explorer, it accommodated from five to seven people. A clear plus was the push-button inclusion of the front axle and the price of the Ford Explorer.
However, it is worth noting that the simple structure of the front suspension, as well as the stiffness of the rear axle, did not allow the Ford Explorer car to develop high speed.
Explorer replaced the Bronco 2. Both of these models were derived from the Ford Ranger, so the Ford Explorer took over many of the Ranger's features and options. The developers of the SUV wanted to create a car for all occasions. General Motors followed the same logic when created the Chevrolet Blazer. For this reason, the Explorer and Chevrolet Blazer have become competitors.
The first generation Ford Explorer had two types of bodies: three and five-door. The three-door model was called the Ford Explorer Sport. Both three and five-door models had either rear-wheel drive or full-drive, it was connected according to the Part-Time scheme. This scheme implied all-wheel drive use only on coatings that would allow wheel slippage. The car had special protection, which did not allow the front-wheel drive to turn on at high speed.
Ford Explorer from the first series had 5 modifications:
- Sport
- XL;
- XLT;
- Limited
- Eddie Bauer;
The most expensive equipment, Limited, included headlights that were sensitive to light (they automatically turned on at night), cruise control, fog lights, air conditioning, an on-board computer, as well as leather seats and many other “luxury” options.
The cars were equipped with a Cologne V-6 engine, which had a volume and power of 4l / 155 horsepower. Engines were produced in the German city of Cologne. Ford Explorer was equipped with two types of gearboxes: a Ford automatic AL4D, which was assembled in France, and a manual gearbox M50D, borrowed from Mazda.
In 1993, the engine of the Ford Explorer was restyled: its power increased to 165 horsepower.
In 1995, the car underwent a significant modernization, which led to the appearance of the second Ford Explorer series.
